Educational Lighting Case Study

4lite & Screwfix transform a school that won a competition
DSC07725

A primary school has recently been awarded £10,000 worth of 4lite lighting through a summer competition run in partnership with Screwfix. Slaithwaite  CE Junior and Infant School emerged as the lucky winner, benefiting from 4lite’s extensive range of high-quality lighting solutions designed for educational environments. Combined with Screwfix’s fast, reliable service and excellent stock availability, the project was delivered smoothly and successfully, resulting in a fantastic outcome for the school.

Background:

Slaithwaite CE Junior and Infant School is a small, semi-rural school in Huddersfield. Occupying buildings that date back to the 1960s, the school serves a tight-knit community but has been hit hard by local authority budget cuts, forcing leadership to make difficult choices between essential maintenance and staffing.

The Challenge

The school’s lighting system consisted of original, high-energy fluorescent strip fittings that were failing, flickering, and becoming increasingly costly to maintain.

Head Teacher Caroline Fowler noted that the old lights were unreliable, often failing completely or flickering distractingly, which forced staff to turn them off and leave some spaces without adequate lighting. Beyond the maintenance headache, the poor lighting quality was negatively impacting the learning environment, a major concern for a school with a growing number of SEN pupils who require consistent, adjustable lighting levels to support concentration.

Occupying a small site, means that the school often needs to utilise every available square foot of space, but lighting was so poor the school was finding increasing areas were unusable.

The challenge was to secure a modern, energy-efficient solution to stop the drain on resources and improve the educational setting.

The Solution

Through a competition win, the school partnered with 4lite, installation experts Finney Electrical, and retail partner Screwfix to deliver a complete overhaul.

The collaboration focused on energy efficiency, improving the learning environment, and future-proofing. Screwfix’s “Click and Collect” service was used to ensure immediate stock availability, allowing Finney Electrical to transport materials directly to the school site without delays.

The product selection was critical to the project’s success:

  • Installer speed: Finney Electrical used 4lite’s 600×600 LED Panels (4L1/4011) and Dome Lights (4L1/3108), both of which feature “push terminals” and a slimline design. This installer-friendly engineering allowed the team to fit each unit in approximately three minutes, ensuring the project was completed rapidly with minimal disruption to school operation.
  • Adaptability: Crucially, the solution included CCT adjustable panels. This allowed the installers to alter the warmth of the light to suit specific classroom projects or student needs, even after installation, without needing to order different stock.
  • Durability and Safety: For utility areas and bathrooms, the 4lite IP65-rated Dome Lights provided necessary water resistance, while the high-output 6ft LED Batten (4L4/2033) ensured powerful, reliable illumination for larger storage spaces.

The Results

The project has transformed the school’s financial outlook and physical environment. All failing fluorescent tubes were removed and replaced with 128 modern LED luminaires.

Financially, the switch is projected to save the school approximately £7,000 per year in energy and maintenance costs. Over a five-year period, this amounts to a total saving of between £30,000 and £40,000. These funds, previously lost to inefficient energy bills and replacement bulbs, can now be redirected into educational resources.

The classrooms are now brighter and more inviting, with low-glare lighting that supports rather than hinders the students’ learning experience.

“The new lighting has absolutely transformed the school. It’s made the whole building much more usable, and the classroom spaces are significantly brighter. It’s a much more positive and pleasant environment for both staff and pupils. The savings this will help us achieve are amazing. We operate on such a tight budget, and all the money we save can be put directly back into the children.”
