Where to use LED strip lighting in the home

Once mainly used as decorative accent lighting, LED strip lighting has become a versatile way to illuminate and transform the home. From practical lighting beneath kitchen cabinets to subtle illumination around shelving, wardrobes and entertainment areas, it can add both function and atmosphere without dominating a room. In this guide, we explore why LED strip lighting has become so popular, where it works best and what to consider when choosing the right option for your space.
4lite LED Strip

In recent years, LED strip lighting has transformed from a niche architectural product into one of the most sought-after home decor lighting solutions. Offering an unbeatable blend of energy efficiency, functionality, and aesthetic appeal, these flexible light strips have changed how we illuminate living and working spaces.

LED strips can adapt to virtually any environment, accentuating features or delivering vibrant task lighting. But, with so many products on the market – offering different levels of brightness, colour options and colour temperature – it is important to consider how and where the product will be used to ensure the right one is selected and maximum effect achieved.

Where to use it

  • Kitchens and dining areas: Used under-cabinet LED strip provides exceptional task illumination for meal preparation, while used at a lower level around plinths and island counters, it creates warmth and ambience.
  • Living rooms and bedrooms: Strip lights are ideal for casting indirect accent light along the tops of wardrobes, within shelving units, or behind televisions to create softer background light and elevate interior design.
  • Bathrooms: Products with IP54 ratings, or above, can be used effectively in drier areas of the bathroom such as recessed shelves, backlit mirrors, and low-level floating vanity to create relaxing illumination.
  • Gaming and entertainment hubs: LED strips can create immersive entertainment environments using colour to enhance the experience of gaming, watching movies or listening to music.

Which product to choose

For all these applications there are a host of products to choose from, offering a variety of functions. These include:

  • Tuneable white – the ability to change the colour temperature of a white light source from a cosy 3000K to a crisp 6500K daylight tone
  • RGBW – offering millions of colour hues to deliver just about any colour required and create diverse atmospheres
  • Dimmable – to adjust the brightness required
  • Smart connectivity – providing the ability to control your lighting remotely via an ‘App’ or voice control, colour, shades of white, brightness and intensity. You can even set your own lighting schedule, enabling the lights to turn on and off automatically.

Ease of installation
One of LED strip’s biggest selling points is its ease of installation. You do not need to be a qualified electrician or have specialist DIY skills to achieve professional-looking results.

  • Standard LED strip lighting comes equipped with a self-adhesive backing tape, making installation as simple as peeling away the protective liner and pressing the strip firmly onto a clean, dry surface.
  • Customisable lengths: LED strip can be purchased in varying lengths and features cut points at short intervals to allow it to be trimmed, as per instructions, to fit exact measurements.
  • Plug-and-play: LED strip can be bought in 24V kits to make installation even simpler. Kits usually include low-voltage power adapters, connectors and a remote control straight out of the box, ensuring quick setup without complex hardwiring.
