Focusing a beam on LED floodlighting – How to choose the right product for your project

LED floodlights are an energy-efficient and versatile lighting solution for both indoor and outdoor spaces, offering high brightness, long lifespan, and low maintenance. When choosing LED floodlights, consider the area size, purpose, lumens required, and whether asymmetrical floodlights are needed to minimize glare and maximize efficiency in specific settings.

Focusing a beam on LED floodlighting

How to choose the right product for your project

LED floodlights are an energy-efficient way to light up indoor and outdoor spaces.

Their power and size means they are the popular choice for large indoor spaces and outdoor locations, such as warehouses, retail outlets and sports grounds, but they can also be used in smaller domestic settings such as porches and gardens.

Why choose LED floodlights?

LED lights are cost-effective, producing a huge amount of light for the relative cost.

They are 90% more energy-efficient than traditional halogen bulbs and have a much longer lifespan – up to 50,000 hours. They are not produced using mercury or lead, so they are safer and kinder to the environment than other floodlights. They are simple to use and very low maintenance.

Most floodlights are motion-activated, programmed to save energy by switching off when light isn’t needed. One of the most advanced types of motion sensor technology is PIR (Passive Infrared Receiver) and floodlights with PIR technology are among the most sensitive on the market. They work by detecting tiny amounts of heat emitted by objects within the floodlight sensor’s field of vision.

All this adds up to a high-security product which is cheap, efficient and long-lasting, with low maintenance and replacement costs.

It makes LED floodlights the perfect choice for supplying long-term bright light outside the home or in commercial, industrial and outdoor spaces, and is the ideal solution for hard-to-reach areas.

Location, location, location

It’s worth repeating – location is the most important factor to consider before buying LED floodlights. Generally speaking, the type of floodlights you need will depend on the size of the area which needs lighting up.

Things to consider include:

  • How large is the area you want to light?
  • Will your floodlights be operating at night in complete darkness, or during the day?
  • What is the purpose of your lights?

A note on lumens

Because all LED bulbs are extremely energy efficient, they are graded according to the amount of brightness they provide – measured in lumens – rather than the amount of power they consume. The higher the lumen count, the brighter the light.

Armed with all this information you can confidently select the best floodlight for your space.

Floodlights for gardens

Floodlighting is an increasingly common aspect of the home and garden, lighting up walkways for safety and providing added security at night.

Domestic floodlights are available for relatively small areas such as pathways, gardens, patios and front porches and are the go-to product to choose in most cases. Their brightness output, of between 400 and 3000 lumens is perfect for smaller settings.

Bigger floodlights can cause light disturbance for neighbours in a normal domestic setting, so should be avoided. However, for larger dwellings with expansive gardens and grounds, floodlights with an output of around 4000 to 5000 lumens, which are commonly used in smaller industrial settings, are considered suitable.

Industrial floodlights

The larger the area that needs lighting, the more lumens will be required. Large industrial and commercial areas should be lit with industrial floodlights, which usually offer an output ranging from 4000 lumens to 24000 lumens.

Choose these for warehouse floors, car parks, garages, construction sites and other large indoor or outdoor spaces where lighting is needed for security or safety.

Our range of high specification IP65 Floodlights are suitable  for these industrial applications and come with a five year warranty.

LED floodlights for outdoor use

Water resistance is a key feature of LED floodlights for outdoor use. Luckily, all modern LED floodlights are built to IP65 standard, meaning they can withstand sprays of water from all angles, so are protected from the worst kind of weather.

We recommend selecting lighter colour temperatures for outdoor floodlighting, as these are the most effective at lighting up large, dark spaces. Look for an LED floodlight with a colour temperature of 5000K or higher. For outdoor floodlights, browse our IP65 Advantage Floodlights.

When to choose asymmetrical floodlights

The difference between symmetrical and asymmetrical floodlighting is simple:

  • Symmetrical floodlights send out an even distribution of light in all directions
  • Asymmetrical floodlights send out a concentrated beam of light in one direction

Asymmetrical floodlights have some key benefits. They are more efficient, illuminating only the areas which require lighting. And they can be positioned in a way which reduces glare and sharp shadows.

This makes them the ideal choice for locations where an indirect glare over a protracted period could cause uncomfortable eye strain, and where there is no need to have bright symmetric lighting – think offices, stadiums and theatres.
