Cutting a hole into any plasterboard ceiling, for example when installing recessed downlights, potentially removes the integrity of the fire barrier, thereby allowing the opportunity for fire to move between spaces. Building Regulations require that appropriately tested fire rated products are to be selected, which have the ability to reinstate the fire barrier back to its original state.   There are three types of Fire Rated Downlights,  , namely 30 minutes, 60 minutes, and 90 minutes, that indicates the timeframe you have before a fire would cause the ceiling to collapse. As each of the time periods relate to a different ceiling construction, selecting the right fitting for the application is extremely important.   4lite’s industry-leading downlights have passed relevant testing to ensure full compliance in all ceiling types.

IP rating is a global standard showing how resistant a product is against the intrusion of solids and liquids.  The first digit is given as a number between 0 & 6 which establishes the level of protection from a solid object, whereas the second digit is given as a number value of between 0 & 9, establishing the level of resistance to moisture. The higher the number, (but not always), the more stringent the protection. A rating of IP20 is the most common for bedrooms and living rooms, whereas light fittings rated IPX4 are protected against splashing water, making them ideally suited for indoor use, in areas such as bathrooms and kitchens, as well as some sheltered outdoor locations. Fixtures rated IPX5 are protected against water jets onto the enclosure from any direction. These fittings should be selected for gardens, exposed outdoor areas and for certain areas where a high level of protection is required.
